Behind Closed Doors
by B.A. Paris
My rating:  3 out of 5 ***

Jack and Grace are the perfect couple – good looking, wealthy, and oh-so in love.  They live in the perfect house, perfectly furnished. They throw perfect dinner parties and have perfect friends.  But no one really knows what happens behind closed doors, and what seems to be an idyllic situation can, in reality, be a living hell.

Grace thought that she was marrying the man of her dreams.  He was attentive, kind and best of all, he loved her younger sister, Millie, who Grace had practically raised.   She has been responsible for Millie for years.  Millie has Downs Syndrome, and her real parents are no help at all.  When Jack asks Grace to marry him, she feels like she would be a fool to say no to someone so perfect, but soon after they are married, she realizes that Jack Angel is no angel after all.

This story alternates between scenes from the present and the past, unraveling slowly as you get to learn what a monster Jack really is.  It is a quick read and, as in Bring Me Back, you feel like you can’t put it down until you find out what happens next. However, it is completely unrealistic.  Jack’s character is so evil that he should be scary, except for the fact that his motivations and actions are so unrealistic it makes him almost ridiculous. Instead of feeling scared or worried for Grace, all I could think was, “Really?”

This is the second book I have read by BA Paris and both have been very similar.  If you are looking for a quick, easy read, this is the book for you. It’s entertaining and good for an afternoon when you are looking to escape for a few hours.  Just remember to bring along a willing suspension of disbelief!

I tried to read this and had to stop after they came back from their honeymoon and she was instructed to go down into the basement to see how the dog was doing. I don’t know what happened to that dog, and I REALLY don’t want to know, lol. I can’t take cruelty to animals, and given Jack’s leanings at the moment, I wasn’t giving him the benefit of the doubt! *shudder* I later asked my online book group what happened at the end of the book since I really was intrigued by the premise. It was exceedingly ridiculous, I agree, but I was sucked in, haha. Definitely a quick, engulfing read! (if you can get past that one part that stopped me!)

I KNOW!!! That part was absolutely horrible. But I was sucked in, too. Couldn’t stop until the end. I felt the same way about her other book, Bring Me Back, too. Have you read any other books by Paris?
