What it’s about:

Lizzie Kitsakis is going through a tough time in her marriage.  Her husband is struggling with alcoholism, causing him to lose his job and get into an accident that incurred a lot of debt.  Lizzie had to leave a job she loved for one that pays a lot more – a defense attorney for the elite law firm, Young and Crane.  And if that isn’t enough to deal with, Lizzie’s old friend from law school calls asking for help.  He’s in jail for killing his wife.

Lizzie finds herself in a situation where she has to defend her friend, Zach, even when she begins to question whether or not he truly is innocent.  Throughout this process, Lizzie learns a lot about her friend, herself and marriage in general.  And none of it is what it appears to be.

Why I liked it:

This is the second book I’ve read by Kimberly McCreight and I loved them both.  McCreight writes her crime thrillers in an intelligent and thought-provoking way.  I never really know what is going to happen next and even though all along the way I am sure I know “who done it,”  I always find myself surprised at the end.

One of the things I really liked about the book was how the chapters alternated between Lizzie in the present, and Amanda, Zach Grayson’s wife, from days before the murder.  I like how you got insight into the back story through the eyes of Zach’s wife and how that tied in to what was happening in current times through the legal proceedings.  Amanda and Lizzie couldn’t have been more different, but both were strong in their own way.  Both had been hurt by the people they loved the most and both had a past that wouldn’t leave them alone.

If you are looking for a good crime drama, this book is for you!
