Hot Toddy – The Cure for What Ails You

October 31, 2018
toddy

This has been a really tough month.  I got walking pneumonia and have had a terrible cough for the last three weeks.  It came with all the other fun cold symptoms, too: sore throat, sinus pressure, fatigue, chills.  I don’t usually get sick, but this really hit me hard.

My husband is a little old-fashioned, and anytime any of us gets sick, he makes us a hot toddy.  I never really believed it could cure my illness, but I never complained when he made them either.  I love them when I am not feeling well. They are sweet and smell good and make you feel all warm inside.  And although I can’t say this drink cured me of my walking pneumonia – I definitely needed antibiotics for that – it did make feel much better.

I started to read up on why this hot, delicious drink is known for curing ailments, and there is some science behind it!  It turns out that whiskey is a great decongestant because the alcohol dilates the blood vessels, making it easier for your mucous membranes to deal with the infection.  Honey is a natural cough suppressant and the warmth from the tea helps open your nasal passages. In fact, I found a picture online of an old doctor’s prescription written in 1962 that actually prescribed it!  Click here to see it.

So you see, hot toddies are good for you! 🙂

I hope that you never get sick.  But if the flu bug finds you this year, definitely try this delicious concoction.  Trust me when I say you will feel (and sleep) much better!

Ingredients:

8 0z boiling water

1 herbal tea bag (we always use chamomile)

1 oz whiskey

Lemon wedges

Directions:

Steep the tea bag in the hot water for a few minutes until it is at desired strength.  Add whiskey and honey. Mix well. Squeeze a bit of lemon in and you are all done! Drink and enjoy!

Stay healthy!
