Last Time I Lied
by Riley Sager
My rating:  4 out of 5 ****

Sometimes a lie is more than just a lie.  Sometimes it’s the only way to win.

The lie began 15 years ago at Camp Nightingale.  Emma, just 13 years old, was placed in a cabin with three older girls.  She woke up one morning and found that they were gone – I mean completely gone. All their stuff was still in the cabin, they just vanished off the face of the earth.  Emma was devastated by losing her new friends, especially the beautiful and popular Vivian, who had taken her under her wing.  The camp closed down and Emma was sent home to deal with the loss.

Flash forward 15 years.  Emma is now a renowned artist, still reeling from the tragedy of her childhood.  She has become obsessed with painting forest scenes which contain the three missing girls hidden within its depths.   One day Fran, the owner of Camp Nightingale, reached out to her and asked her to return to the camp, this time as a counselor.  Emma decides that the only way for her to gain some closure is to go back and find out what happened to her friends on that fateful night.   She returns to the camp to face her past, to face the mystery surrounding the strange disappearance, and to face the facts that things are not always as they appear.

This was a fun, summer thriller that kept me guessing the entire way through.  I couldn’t wait to find out what happened to those girls at Camp Nightingale and why Emma felt such guilt over the incident.  Sager has a way of slowly unraveling the mystery in a way that makes it hard to put the book down! I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to all readers who love a good thriller!
