It’s time for Five for Friday!  Each week, these posts will have lists of five bookish things.  Today I have listed some fun facts I’ve found around the Internet.  There are links about new research on reading and happiness, a cool new movie coming this month and a can’t miss podcast.  Hope you enjoy!

5 Bookishly Fun Facts
  1. Reading friends, if you ever needed proof that reading is really good for you, here is the science to back it up! This article from NBC News, Why getting lost in a book is so good for you, according to science, says that reading builds empathy, social connection and can even prolong our lives.  So good news bookworms – keep reading.
  2.  A few years back, I read the book The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters.  I loved it so much, I read every single one of her books afterwards.  I just heard they are making that book into a movie! It will be released on August 31.  Click here to see the article.  I’m currently rereading the book, just to be able to compare it fairly.  Stay tuned for the book review coming soon.

  3. Do you ever feel like you read a lot of books, but then can’t remember what they are even about months later? This happens to me all the time.  I recently found an article in The Atlantic that makes me feel a little better about my horrible memory: Why we forget most of the books we read.
Basically the article says that the way we read is like binge-reading.  We read quickly to get the experience of finding out what happens next. To really learn something we would have to really slow down and only read a little bit at a time.  I don’t know about you, but that would make me crazy!  For now, I am just going to keep binge-reading and forgetting:)  Hopefully writing my book reviews will help me keep my plot lines straight – at least a little better.
  4. I am a big Ruth Ware fan.  I love her books and have read all of them.  This summer, Ruth’s new book, The Death of Mrs. Westaway was released.  And although it wasn’t my favorite book of hers, (if you are interested, try a Dark, Dark Night), I still really liked it.  She was recently on the Barnes and Noble podcast to talk about her book  and I thought it was a great interview. So if you like to listen to podcasts, give it a try!  Here is the link.

  5. Reading is such a big part of my life that I like to have books all around my home.  I was happy to find an article online that showed decorating with books is actually a thing. I am always wondering how I can  weave a love of literature into home decor, and have plans to work more of that into my own home.  Here is an article from The Independent on Five Ways to Decorate Your Home with Books.

That’s it for today.  Thanks for reading this post.  Until next time, happy reading!

I’ve just discovered your blog through Pinterest and I find it great. I can totally relate to you regarding the point 3. I began a few months ago to write book reviews because I tend to forget what the books are about. I am not so sure about whether reading slowly really helps though. I tend to remember much better fiction books than non-fiction books whereas I read fiction books much faster.

Thanks for visiting the blog! I’m with you in that I read fiction books much faster. My problem is that I can never remember what they are about! Although I do struggle remembering nonfiction, too. I guess that’s why it’s nice to reread. Let’s see if book reviews help us out!
