February’s Bookish Links

February 27, 2019
bookish

February is almost over! Time always goes by so quickly. Looking back, I didn’t have a great reading month. January was much better for me. I read 7 books in January and only 4 in February. One reason for that is I didn’t get through as many audiobooks this month. The audiobook I did listen to was over 17 hours! It was a long book, but pretty interesting – the first Karin Slaughter book I’ve ever read.

In addition to books, I’ve also been doing some reading online. Here are 5 Bookish Links that I loved this month!

Apple released 6 free classic audiobooks!  I am especially excited because Pride and Prejudice, one of my favorite books ever, is narrated by Kate Beckinsale, star of Emma, one of my favorite Austen movies, ever!  All my stars are aligning! Kelsey Grammar reading Orson Welles’ Time Machine is another one I plan to download on my Apple Books app.  Thanks Apple!

Popular Science Magazine is getting on board with what we already know – that reading is good for you!  This article reviews the sad fact that although we all know this, statistics are showing that less Americans read now than ever before ( a quarter of all Americans did not read a book last year).  The article then goes into ways to fit more reading into your life. Welcome aboard, Popular Science!

Literary Horoscopes:  Here’s a fun twist on horoscopes.  In addition to offering insight into what you can expect in your life for 2019, this site also gives advice on books you can read to help you along your predicted pathway.  A perfect mix of fun and future! I am a Gemini and this site predicts that I will feel more powerful if I look at my finances more closely (already true!) and then lists books to help me do that.   What does your literary horoscope recommend for you?

A Bookish Valentines Couples Activity:  This sweet article is perfect for Valentine’s month!  It features a Los Angeles couple that have set a goal to visit all 85 public libraries in LA County, which covers over 4,000 square miles.  I know that our public library is my happy place. This sounds like a great roadtrip to me. Happy trails!

Common expressions:  Did you ever wonder where some of our common expressions came from?  Most of them, of course, are literary references. This site lists hundreds of expressions we hear everyday, and describes their origins.  Truth really is stranger than fiction!

That’s all for this month.  Until next time, happy reading!

I once read the horoscope page of a newspaper and for my astrological sign (Widder), it said “No one likes you and they are right because you are a horrible person”. Since then, I have had some problems with horoscopes. This one means I am going to live new adventures abroad and advise me to read a book about life in Paris. In a way, this is accurate because I have already booked a flight to Paris. On the other hand, I do not really count that as an adventure because we are going there to visit my parents, just like every year.

That is terrible! I’ve never read a horoscope like that, although I must admit I don’t really read horoscopes at all. I just thought these were fun because they were literary. I think that no matter the reason for going to Paris, it’s always a good one! I would love to go there. Have fun!
