What it’s about:

Jesse Hunt and her husband Kyle just moved into a huge house in Westport Beach, California.  Kyle’s career has taken off and he wanted to move to a neighborhood where the couple could settle down, meet some new people and where he could join the country club and meet some prospective new clients.  Jesse, wanting to be the perfect wife, and still working on her licensure to be a criminal profiler, wants to support her husband, but is not sure she likes his new friends.  Things seem off and everyone around her seems like they are hiding something.  Add in the fact that her project for class has put her in the midst of a notorious serial killer and that he seems disturbingly familiar with every aspect of her life, Jesse feels like her world has turned upside down.  Who can she trust?

Why I didn’t like it:

This book has sections that are so similar to Silence of the Lambs, it was almost funny.  The other parts of the book were right out of Stepford Wives. Because of that and the fact that the plot was kind of predictable made this a three star book for me.  There were also a few parts that did not seem connected to the story at all.  References to some past trauma and her discussions with the prison inmate were out in left field.  I couldn’t figure out where the author was going with it until I realized that this book was the first in a series and this was the beginnings of the next story line..  I think that he could have done a better job integrating the two storylines in this book to make it seem more cohesive.

Why I did like it:

Still, overall it was a good audiobook listen.  While predictable, it was fast-paced and engaging.  I looked forward to driving to work to hear what was going to happen next.  This was one of those books that although not ground-breaking or complex, it was enjoyable – and we all need those kinds of reads once in a while!  If you are looking for an audiobook thriller that is easy listening, this one’s for you!
