I love podcasts. There are podcasts on absolutely everything you would ever want to hear about! And most are between 30 – 45 minutes, which I think is the perfect length. I don’t have a long commute to work, and my walks are generally that amount of time. I used to listen to audible books, but it was hard for me to sustain interest over an eight-hour book when I could only listen in short bursts. Podcasts are perfect for that.
As I said, there are podcasts on every subject imaginable, but my favorite are the ones on books. I have always loved to hear what people are reading, and this is the perfect way to find out about new books and backlist books as well. Some of my favorite books this year I first heard about on a podcast.
There are so many different shows you can listen to. Here, I listed my top 5 bookish podcasts. I hope you enjoy listening to these!
The Librarian is In
This is a fun podcast, put on by two New York City librarians, Frank and Gwen. They are hilarious. I love to listen to their back and forth conversation. And they introduce really great books. After all, who would know books better than a librarian? And sometimes they bring in recommendations from other librarians as well.
Barnes and Noble
This podcast consists of interviews with famous authors, usually with newly released titles. I love to hear what my favorite authors have to say about their new books. It always adds to my understanding of their work. It’s interesting to hear where their ideas come from and how they evolve.
What Should I Read Next
Anne Bogel, author of the Modern Mrs. Darcy blog, hosts this show and gives her guests recommendations based on the books they like. She always asks them to tell her three books they loved and one they hated, and then she offers them three new ideas. This is a great podcast because you get to hear about so many books, both from the guests and from Anne! I have gotten lots of great recs from this show.
All the Books
This is Book Riot’s podcast, which alternates between new releases and backlist titles. The new release shows tend to be a little longer, while the backlist shows tend to be short – around 10 minutes. I like to listen to this show to hear about new books coming out. It keeps me up to date on releases!
Serial
Admittedly, this is not really a “bookish” podcast, but it is one of my favorites. This show is hosted by Sarah Koenig, who does investigative reporting. This is the third season of her show, and this season focuses on our justice system, which I am finding fascinating. The first season really hooked me, too. That was about a young man who was in jail for murdering his high school girlfriend. He always maintained his innocence and Sarah’s team went over all the evidence in each episode. There was so much support for the young man, Adnan, that he actually received another trial after the show aired. If you haven’t listened to Serial, I highly suggest it!
That’s all for today. Until next time, happy reading!
I recently started following The Modern Mrs Darcy blog! I haven’t quite gotten into podcasts yet, but I think the time is coming. I DO have a long commute, and I need something besides the radio to keep me company, and I don’t think I can listen to an audiobook while I queue foe the GWB and still enjoy it, lol. Maybe I’ll try Bogel’s first…. thanks for the recs!
If you are anything like me, you will get hooked on these! I love to hear all about new books coming out – or just great backlist titles. Anne Bogel’s is a great place to start. I love her blog, too. Let me know what you think about the podcast!
I’ll have to look into these. I usually don’t listen to podcasts but I’ve been wanting to!
I am hooked! If you are going to start, try Anne Bogel’s first. That is one of my favorites!
