5 things to put in a fall college care package

College care package

It’s been about a month now since my daughter left for college.  The first month is always the hardest because she was home all summer and I get used to having her to shop with, to talk to, and just hang out with.    I know that she misses me a little, too, because we talk on the phone nearly everyday. That’s why I like to send her a little bit of home in a care package every once in awhile.

Care packages make her feel special and loved – who doesn’t love getting gifts in the mail?  I try to send things that serve two purposes. First, I send things that I know she needs or will be able to use.  But I also try to send things that have a special meaning for us – things that an inside joke, or maybe just a mutual love.

Here are some things that I put in her fall care package:

  1. Pumpkin bread – I always try to put some homemade baked item in her packages, and in the fall I like to put mini-loaves of pumpkin bread.  My daughter is like me – she loves everything pumpkin! Baking pumpkin bread has always been one of the first signs of fall in our house. For her loaves I also add in some chocolate chips.  Yummy!
  2. Fall coffee pods – Another love that we both share is coffee! In the summer, we sit and drink our morning coffee on the patio outside.  It’s a nice chance for us to sit down and talk – and laugh at our crazy puppies. She has a Keurig at school, so in each care package I send some pods.  In the fall, I look for fall flavors to add. In this package I will send some Pumpkin Spice and Pecan Pie.
  3. Gift cards – What college kid doesn’t appreciate a gift card to their favorite places?  She loves gift cards because then she can go to the places she wouldn’t be able to afford to go otherwise!  Some cards she especially likes are Starbucks, Chipotle, Jimmy Johns, or Target.
  4. Fall scents – I love to burn candles in the fall.  It makes our home smell and feel cozy and it’s one of the things my daughter says she misses the most.  In this care package, I sent her a fall Bath and Body Works diffuser and scent pods since candles are taboo on college campuses.  They have a wide variety of diffuser shapes and tons of new scents every season.
  5. Handwritten note – Of course, I always finish off the care package with a little note, reminding her how much we love and miss her, and giving her encouragement to work hard and do the right thing, even if we’re not there!

What are some things you’d like to get in a care package?

This is a very sweet idea. I am sure your daughter will be very happy.
I have never tried pumpkin bread before. Here in Germany, this is the season for Zwiebelkuchen (onion cake). But what I am really looking forward is winter time because of the Lebkuchen. These are German gingerbread cookies that are delicious.

My mom was German and her sister used to send us packages from Germany every Christmas. We love lebkuchen! Pumpkin bread is delicious, too. I can send you the recipe if you are interested! It’s spicy and moist, a great fall flavor!
